In the 1968 movie Bullitt, McQueen played Lieutenant Frank Bullitt, a San Francisco cop charged with keeping a key witness in a Mafia criminal trial safe from some hitmen.
It was one of McQueen's most famous roles and on the streets of San Francisco the Ford Mustang 390GT he drove and a black Dodge Charger created the most famous car chase scene of all time.
At the wheel of the car and indeed in most of the film's scenes, McQueen wore a herringbone tweed jacket with elbow patches, over a French Navy roll neck jumper.
Until now, there's never been an accurate copy of that jacket, but now there is.
This one is totally faithful to the original in almost every respect.
The cloth is a Scottish Tweed of an almost identical pattern and colouring to McQueen's.
The notched lapels are the same, as is the button arrangement, right down to the top button and button hole which are part concealed behind the lapel.
Like McQueen's jacket, this version has three external flapped pockets and twin vents at the rear. The jacket replicates the swelled edging of the original.
In only one key respect does the replica differ from the Lieutenant's actual garment. You see his was actually a shooting jacket with rather bizarre elbow panels. The left patch was extended down the arm to protect the jacket when lying on the grass aiming a rifle
They would look out of place on a jacket today and so this replica has a more standard arrangement.
In tailoring terms, this is an exquisite jacket, designed and put together by a Savile Row cutter, but as there is no middle-man between us and our customers, we are able to offer it at a fraction of the price you would expect to pay for a coat of this quality at, say, a Jermyn Street gentleman's outfitter.
It's a great piece of classic styling. All you need now is a turtle neck jumper and, of course, a Highland Green Mustang 390GT.

A nice jacket but.....

What you get for your money is fairly a nice jacket. It's well constructed and the materials are fine. Is it much like the jacket from Bullitt though, which is what it sets out to be and is it's main selling point? Well, there are problems. The elbow patches are much smaller rather than the distinctive long patches on the original. This was aparently a deliberate choice by the makers. I don't think it was a good choice but ok... A bigger problem I have is with the button placement. On McQueen's jacket it's visually obvious that the top button hole is level with the top pocket - creating a very high gorge typically 60s look if this is buttoned. On the replica this top button is at least 5" too low and conseqently the middle button is also a couple of inches too low. The fabric of the original has a more pronounced striped effect on screen that this herringbone displays too. So what we have is a nice three button jacket with a ticket pocket that bears a very superficial resemblence to the Bullitt jacket. Frankly, I had hoped for better given the manufacturers apparent motivation for making the jacket. Also for £200 you could probably find a similarly close-enough jacket for £30 or £40 less.

Great jacket!

I ordered this jacket on the basis that if it was no good I could always send it back and, despite the extensive product description, this is what I expected I would have to do. I was very pleasantly surprised, however, in almost every possible way.Firstly, although delivery was free the jacket arrived within 24 hours of my order.Secondly, the packaging was simple: a white cardboard box, ie not over the top and very effective.Thirdly, I ordered a "small" based on the measurements in the description and it fits me perfectly.The fabric may not be the highest quality Scottish tweed (I am no expert) but it seems hard wearing, although having owned the jacket for less than 24 hours I can't really tell.In summary, at this point in the proceedings, I couldn't be more satisfied.
